Composting Hints

Here are a few composting hints. Composting is a very environmentally friendly practice. It will provide an excellent nutritional benefit to your lawn or garden. It is another form of recycling, keeping the material out of land-fill sites.

  1. Use newspaper to line kitchen compost containers. They can go out with the compost. They absorb odours and save on the need to wash the container
  2. Grass clippings can be raked up and added to the compost. They will add nitrogen and give you a more balanced compost pile.
  3. Some earth added to the compost from time to time will help it work through more quickly.
  4. It is good to turn the compost in the bin or container with a shovel periodically.
  5. Avoid putting meat or dairy into your compost as they will attract pests you don't want.
  6. Compost piles can be set up just on the ground in a designated area of your garden.
  7. Compost bins can be made from old boards. Old pallets, used for shipping, can be nailed together to make a compost bin. Avoid using particle board which is made from wood chips and glue as that will contaminate the compost.
