Composting Hints
Here are a few composting hints. Composting is a very environmentally friendly practice. It will provide an excellent nutritional benefit to your lawn or garden. It is another form of recycling, keeping the material out of land-fill sites.
- Use newspaper to line kitchen compost containers. They can go out with the compost. They absorb odours and save on the need to wash the container
- Grass clippings can be raked up and added to the compost. They will add nitrogen and give you a more balanced compost pile.
- Some earth added to the compost from time to time will help it work through more quickly.
- It is good to turn the compost in the bin or container with a shovel periodically.
- Avoid putting meat or dairy into your compost as they will attract pests you don't want.
- Compost piles can be set up just on the ground in a designated area of your garden.
- Compost bins can be made from old boards. Old pallets, used for shipping, can be nailed together to make a compost bin. Avoid using particle board which is made from wood chips and glue as that will contaminate the compost.
