Energy Efficient Windows

Energy Efficient Windows

Energy efficient windows come in a variety of styles, colours, materials and qualities. The most efficient windows carry the Energy Star logo. This designation assures you that these windows have met the highest testing standards for energy saving. The added benefits are that they will continue to serve well for a long time, some even come with a lifetime warranty, and you will enjoy increased comfort in your home. Types of Windows

The highest quality windows are the awning type which opens outward from the bottom, or casement, which means they open outwards from the side. These designs provide the best seal against wind and rain. The other categories of opening windows are single or double hung or sliders. Single means that they open upwards from the bottom and double means that they can also open downwards from the top. Sliders simply mean that they slide from side to side. One advantage with the windows that slide to open is that they often have the feature of opening inward for cleaning. Materials Used

Traditionally, windows came with wood frames. Vinyl has become the most popular type of material used for a variety of reasons. It can be purchased in a variety of colours so that it does not need to be painted. Good quality vinyl that is UV protected lasts for a very long time and it does not rot or warp. Low Emissivity

Low "E" is a coating utilized in insulating glass. The coating was developed to provide improved shading in the summer and solar heat gain in the winter. The benefits are warmer glass temperature for the winter, reduced glass temperature for summer conditions compared to clear glass, reduced ultraviolet light transmissions which helps prevent fading of draperies and furniture and reduces heating and cooling costs so are effective for both warm and cold seasons. Fifty percent of air conditioning costs are attributed to heat coming from windows.

Argon Gas

Argon Gas is a colourless, odorless, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-corrosive gas used to insulate the dead air space normally found between the thermal pane units. Argon gas improves the R Value of the window (up to R4.2) by reducing heat transfer. This rating almost doubles if you go to triple glaze windows filled with argon gas.

Conclusion

One of the most environmentally friendly construction products we can use are Energy Star windows. After using good insulation, energy efficient windows are probably the most effective thing we can do to reduce energy use in our homes.
