Home Made Soap

Home made soap recipe for washing (Laundry/Kitchen), Hand Cleaner, General Purpose Recipe:

This recipe has been passed around. Try it out and let us know how you like it. I've used this for my washing and the clothes are cleaner than with the propriety brands. As all my grey water goes to food of some sort, I've watched carefully and have had no bad effects at all. I make 20 litres at a time.

This is as I copied it from how it was supplied to me:

20 litres

What you need:

  • Approximately 100 to 125 grams pure soap = 1 cake purest soap or approx. 125 grams in weight. Look for Sunlight or Velvet brands pure laundry soap made by "Lever Brothers Division". A Google will get results.
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 3 teaspoons eucalypt or tea tree oil
  • a few drops of lemon or lavendar essential oil for perfume
  • 10 litres of cold water
  • 9 litres of hot water.

What to do:

  • Grate the soap, or slice strips off with a veggie peeler, and place into a large saucepan. Cover with 2 litres of cold water.
  • Bring to boil and add washing soda crystals. Stir until melted.
  • Stir in eucalyptus oil, vinegar and essential oil.
  • Pour into a bucket and add 9 litres of hot water and then stir in 8 litres of cold water.
  • Leave to cool. When cool transfer to smaller containers and label.
Good when used for:
  • Laundry detergent for front and top loading machines and hand washing. 2-3 required cups depending on load size.
  • Pre-soaker for heavily soiled items.
  • Washing-up liquid 10-20 ml/10 litres of water.

I store it in 1 and 2 litre plastic fruit juice containers.

Other Laundry Soap Recipes

Recipe 1

What you need:

  • Hot water
  • 1 bar (4.5 oz) Ivory Soap - grated
  • 1 cup Washing Soda
What to do:
  • In a large saucepan add grated soap and enough hot water to cover.
  • Heat over medium-low heat and stir until soap is melted.
  • Fill a large pail with 2.5 gallons of hot water, add hot soap mixture. Stir until well mixed.
  • Then add the washing soda; again stirring until well mixed.
  • Set aside to cool.
Good when used for:
  • Use 1/2 cup per full load, stirring well before each use (will gel)

Recipe 2

What you need:

  • 1 cup vinegar (white)
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
What to do:
  • Mix well and store in sealed container.

Note: Soap will be lumpy, goopy and gel-like. This is normal. Just give it a good stir before using.

Make sure soap is covered with a lid when not in use.

You could also pour the homemade soap in old (and cleaned) laundry detergent bottles and shake well before each use.

Enjoy these home made soap recipes and share them around. They are an affordable solution and very environmentally friendly.
