Saltless Water Softener, Or Conditioner?
Do you need a water softener? Do you need a saltless water softener? You need to determine a number of facts, before you can answer these questions. If your water source is a well, either private or community, there may be minerals suspended in the water. The minerals most commonly found in well water are calcium and magnesium and sometimes iron. The amount of these minerals will determine the hardness of the water. It is considered hard if there are over 121 mg/litre and very hard if over 180 mg/litre of minerals suspended in the water. If the water is hard, a water softener is often recommended. The most common method of softening water is to replace ions of calcium and magnesium with sodium and potassium.
Reasons for softening water: If the water is left untreated, mineral deposits will build up in pipes, around the elements in the hot-water tank (requiring more energy to heat water), on the surface of sinks and toilets, and on the inside of the washing machine and dish-washer (shortening their longevity). Added to this are the clogging up of the shower Fawcett and deposits on glasses and dishes, not to mention clothing getting grey and stiff. The harder the water is, the more soap you will need for any type of washing. Incidentally, individuals who need to restrict sodium or potassium in take for health reasons would want to run a separate line prior to the softening system, for drinking and cooking. There is some concern about negative impact on septic systems with water softened this way. It is also, not recommended for watering of lawns or gardens.

Again, the HydroFLOW technology is not a water softener, it is a water conditioner.
