You need to determine a number of facts, before you can answer these questions. If your water source is a well, either private or community, there may be minerals suspended in the water. The minerals most commonly found in well water are calcium and magnesium and sometimes iron. The amount of these minerals will determine the hardness of the water. It is considered hard if there are over 121 mg/litre and very hard if over 180 mg/litre of minerals suspended in the water. If the water is hard, a water softener is often recommended. The most common method of softening water is to replace ions of calcium and magnesium with sodium and potassium.
