Toxic Household Products

Toxic household products, unfortunately, very often the household products that are most familiar to us have ingredients that are quite harmful to us.

Do you like the strong smells many of our home cleaners emit? For many of us these are the smells we have come to equate with being clean. However, for others these same smells have come to mean great misery. Chemicals in the environment and in our homes make breathing more difficult for people suffering from asthma and other health sensitivities. It seems that just about every day there are more toxins in our environment. Along with this increase of toxins is a steady increase in the number of individuals who suffer severe allergic reaction to the chemical smells. Allergic reactions can also be from personal use products such as shampoos, soaps, and fragrances.

It is not only humans who are suffering from the chemicals. Probably most affected are the fish and other marine life as well as vegetation. We use chemical cleaners, cosmetics, and medications in our daily lives. When we are finished with them, they drain from our homes into sewage treatment plants in towns and cities. The sewage is treated but many of the chemicals and medications remain. These in turn are left to flow into lakes and rivers or go back onto the land as fertilizer.

Chemical pesticides and fertilizers used on lawns and gardens can also make their way to storm sewers and thus into our lakes and rivers, if not from direct run-off. This together with acid rain has caused a significant change in the growth of vegetation in lakes and rivers. There are also indications of changes in the development of fish. Especially troubling are the concerns about the reproduction of some species.

You may ask "what can be done?". The most effective thing we can do is change our habits and the type of products we use. Often there are cleaners we can use which are not harmful to people or the environment. Vinegar for example can be very helpful for cleaning and even weed control.
