Water Bottles

Every day in North America alone, literally millions of plastic water bottles end up in land fill sites. In addition to this problem, many people have concerns about the chemicals that may leach out of the plastic. This is an even greater concern if the bottle is washed and reused. Bisphenol-A (BPA) has received a great deal of attention over the last few years. It is an organic compound present in some hard plastics such as water and baby’s bottles, and in the epoxy resins used to coat the interior of vegetable and soup cans, etc. Some scientists believe that it acts like the hormone estrogen, and has been shown by tests to affect reproduction in mice. The Canadian government has restricted the use of Bisphenol-A. The American FDA (Food and Drug Administration) initially claimed that the amount of BPA that might leach into food is so small that it would have no negative effect, but they have reversed that position. many retailers have responded by removing plastic bottles of water containing BPA from their shelves.

A wonderful alternative to disposable bottles are the reusable metal bottles, which are definitely considered to be safer for the individual, as well as for the environment.

One of the better bottles is

Kleen Kanteen. It is a water bottle made of food grade stainless steel. It was designed in the U.S. and is manufactured in China. The manufacturing process is over-seen by the U.S. company and there are routine tests for quality. Klean Kanteen offers three different sizes and lids and colours. They go from the children’s sippy cup to a one litre bottle. They are light, durable and safe, and can be washed in the dishwasher. However, it is recommended that the polypropylene #5 plastic lid be washed by hand using white vinegar and baking soda. A stainless steel lid is also available for this product. This product is an excellent alternative to the disposable plastic variety.
